Petrona Davies confirmed as Permanent Secretary for Health

    Monday, January 25 – His Excellency the Governor, after consultation with the Public Service Commission, has confirmed Mrs. Petrona Davies’ appointment as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development.
     
    Mrs. Davies whose confirmation is retroactive to January 7, 2009 has been the acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development since July 7, 2008.  Prior to that time, Mrs. Davies served as the Deputy Secretary in the Premier’s Office.
     
    Mrs. Davies first joined the public service over 20 years ago as a clerical trainee in the then-Chief Minister’s Office, where she worked from 1988 until 1991. She later served as a social worker at the Social Development Department, then as Executive Director of the National Drug Advisory Council. In 2001, Mrs. Davies joined the Public Sector Development Programme, and was later appointed coordinator.
     
    Mrs. Davies holds a Certificate in Addiction Studies from the University of the West Indies, a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Summa Cum Laude) in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Alabama A&M University, and a Master of Science degree (with distinction) in Development Administration from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.  Mrs. Davies also holds the Chartered Management Institute Level Seven Executive Diploma in Strategic Management.
     
    The permanent secretary serves as the chief advisor to the Minister of Health and Social Development and is responsible for the overall planning, management and coordination of the ministry.
     
    The Ministry of Health and Social Development works to provide leadership which promotes health, social well-being, and a safe environment as positive resources for living and sustainable development.
