Monday, January 25 –The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) will be hosting Mr. Shernon Osepa, Manager, Regional Relations-Caribbean for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on January 28 and 29.

While in the Territory, Mr. Osepa, who is based in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, will facilitate a workshop on the Internet, domain name system, Internet ecosystem and governance, among other areas. The workshop, which is open to the public, will be held on Thursday, January 28 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Treasure Isle Hotel Conference Room.

TRC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Lamanauskas strongly believes that Thursday’s workshop will open the doors to everyone in the Virgin Islands to be a part of the future of the Internet. “This workshop is not only for engineers or technical people; it is not only for service providers; it is for everyone who uses the Internet and is interested in how it will develop,” Mr. Lamanauskas told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“I am proud and delighted that we can offer to the local Internet community an opportunity to learn how the Internet really works and its relationship with ICANN, without which the Internet could not function,” Mr. Lamanauskas said adding that, “Furthermore, ICANN plays a major role not only in ensuring that we could use the Internet today, but also in shaping its future.”

Interested persons are asked to register with the TRC by calling 468-4165 or sending an email to dstoutt@trc.vg by January 26.

The visiting ICANN representative will also deliver a lecture to students of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Paraquita Bay campus.

ICANN is an essential element in the functioning of the Internet. It is dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and inter-operable. ICANN also promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers for domain names such as .com, .net, .vg as well as Internet Protocol (IP) numbers. ICANN’s role is to oversee the huge and complex inter-connected network of unique identifiers that allow computers on the Internet to find one another and hence allow the Internet to function.

ICANN is an international, non-profit corporation based in California, USA which has responsibility for IP address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domain name system management and root server system management functions. More information can be found at www.icann.org.
