BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWO Kittitian rappers, Vakeel ‘Lex’ Pereira and Shahib ‘Simp’ Gillard, recently collaborated on a new track titled ‘A Day in the Life’, which also features the vocals of Nerissa Mourillon.

The song was first performed in November 2009 at the Clash of the High Schools competition in Carnival Village and it received positive feedback from the audience.

The song has a Hip-Hop beat with an island flavour that makes listeners want to dance to it. The rap and vocal skills of the artistes featured on the track are superb as they sing about enjoying what life has to offer.

Referred to as ‘The new princess of Hip-Hop’ in the song by Gillard, Mourillon said that she has been singing at a young age and had attended Mrs. Lawrence School of Music.

The 18-year-old Clarence Fitroy Bryant Student said that she first performed publicly at talent shows hosted by her school while she was a First Former.

Calarence said she loves music but always had an interest in pursuing a career in medicine and would be attending medical school later this year.

Gillard got his start in music while attending high school when he joined a group called P Cube which later changed its name to Da Embassy. He met Pereira while they both taught at the Sandy Point High School. They became friends and started working on collaborations.

Pereira told SKNVibes that the first track they worked on was called ‘Protect Me’.
Pereira also got into music at a young age and he is interested in Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soca, Reggae and a variety of other forms of music.

“I actually took it serious when I was in college and was a part of a group called ‘Illmatic’. After I left the group I started performing on shows,” he said.He said that ‘A Day in Life’ reflects the fun activities he and Gillard have been a part of, which includes Zip Lining, Jet Skiing and Sea Trekking.

“So we were like this is a day in the life…this is how people are suppose to live. So we just decided to come together and put a song together called ‘A Day in the Life’. The message is basically about regardless of your social status, everyone should have a right to enjoy their life and do everything, at least once,” Pereira said.

Pereira said that he and Gillard would be going abroad to pursue higher education and would shoot a video for the song when they return to St. Kitts on summer vacation.

He is also hoping to positively influence people with his music and sees himself as a role model for young people.
“I don’t want to be boasting or anything, but I just want to make good music so people can relate to it.

“I rap about stuff that happens in my life. It’s not about cars or money; it’s just life and the simplest things. You can be on the beach relaxing and get inspiration from a wave, breeze blowing; it’s how you go through life…” Pereira said.
