(Labour Secretariat) - Former Minister of Agriculture, Housing, Fisheries and Co-operatives and   Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8, Cedric Liburd, is thanking the voters of the constituency for their support in the January 25th General Elections.

“I am pleased that I was given the opportunity to serve the people as a parliamentarian over the years,” Liburd said during an exclusive interview at his home in Upper Monkey Hill, St. Peter’s Parish on Tuesday evening (2nd February).

He remarked “The democratic process and the Constitution of this land give us the right to choose. The voters have done so and I have accepted my defeat."

“ I think it is time for me to move on and shake the hand of the person who has won and I have done that. I have congratulated him and given a commitment do whatever I can do to help,” he said.

Liburd highlighted how his discipline in the area of sports has taught him true sportsmanship in the area of politics.

“Let me just say that I have played football. I have played cricket and I’m presently a domino player. There is always a loser and a winner. I have no bitterness in my heart for the loss that I have experienced,” he said.

Liburd said he is really pleased that his campaign workers and election committee were able to work over the election campaign period, which he described as being not easy.

Additionally, he thanked the unwavering support of his family members for the sacrifices that they have made and the selflessness showed in his political career, thus allowing him effectively to serve  the people of Constituency # 8 and the country on a whole.

He gave credit the St.Kitts/Nevis Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, late Sir Lee L. Moore for the pivotal role played in his political career, especially during the initial stages.

Liburd said he is looking forward to when the Labour Party Administration puts it Cabinet together, noting that he has already indicated to Prime Minister and leader of Labour Party, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas that he is ready and willing to serve the people of the country where possible.

He concluded: “No matter what you do there are some who will oppose you but at the end of the day as a politician, it is your duty to serve everyone and that is what I try to do.”

“As a politician I don’t see myself serving one set of people. Some say that this was my downfall but I don’t mind. I have served the entire constituency and that is why I am happy that I was able to produce and I would like to thank everyone across the constituency, whether Labour or PAM supporters to have given me the opportunity to serve,” he said.

Liburd had been the elected Parliamentary Representative for Constituency # 8 for three consecutive terms (1995-2004), up until the recently held General Elections when he lost to the PAM candidate, Eugene Hamilton by a mere 31 votes.
