Labour Party surpasses its 2004 popular vote in St. Kitts

Labour Secretariat

Basseterre (February 03, 2010) -- The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) has convincingly won a historic fourth consecutive term in the Jan. 25 General Elections by surpassing its 2004 General Elections popular vote by gaining 60 percent of the total votes cast.

Political commentators have hailed the victory of the SKNLP as a tremendous feat that deserves the highest of admiration for a party on the threshold of a fourth term.

In 2004, three parties in St. Kitts contested the General Elections: The SKNLP, The People’s Action Movement (PAM) and The United National Empowerment Party (UNEP). Then, a total of 19, 609 votes were cast of which the SKNLP gained 11, 427 votes; the PAM got 7,160 votes; the UNEP recorded 253 votes; independent votes totaled 70 and there were 122 spoilt ballots.

The victorious SKNLP in 2004 gained 58.27 percent of the total votes cast; the PAM gained 36.5 percent of votes cast and the UNEP and an independent candidate gained 1.65 percent of votes cast on St. Kitts.

Of the 21,422 votes cast in the 2010 General Elections, the SKNLP received 12,686 votes, while the PAM received 8,607 votes, giving the SKNLP 60 percent of the total votes cast and the PAM 40 percent of the total votes cast.

Although the SKNLP had its majority of seats reduced from 7-1 in 2004 to 6-2 in 2010, it was still able to surpass its 2004 popular vote of total votes cast by 2 percentage points.
