Roadtown, Tortola - Fifteen officers from the Fire and Rescue Services Department are participating in a Leadership for Changing Times Course offered by the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College as part of efforts to build capacity within the department.

“The Ministry of Communications and Works is committed to investing in the professional growth of our employees through various training initiatives such as this one,” Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Julian Fraser, RA told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr. William Penn said, “I am happy that so many of our officers were afforded this opportunity as it is very vital to our operations.”

The course began on January 22 and will conclude on March 5.  During that time the participants will be exposed to topics which include but are not limited to visionary leadership, winning at leadership, analyzing yesterday to create opportunities for tomorrow, swimming against the tide and managing talent in a changing global environment.

The course was designed to provide the context for framing leadership or managerial problems that may arise in the workplace. It helps managers understand how their operations fit into a wider society and how inter-connected we are and also sets the tone for succession planning as well as help establish a cadre of leaders equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure continuity.

“I am hopeful that this training session will be beneficial to the officers and that they will apply what they have learned to help advance the mission and objectives of the department,” Mr. Penn said.

The Fire and Rescue Services Department is committed to protecting life and property from the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
