Press & Public Relations, Nevis Island Administrat

Charlestown Nevis (March 12, 2004) Barbados based United States of Ambassador to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Her Excellency Mrs. Mary Kramer, on Friday met and held discussions with the Nevis Island Cabinet at the Administration Building Conference Room in Charlestown.

In welcoming the ambassador to the island, Premier the Hon Vance Amory not only noted his pleasure on behalf of the other members of cabinet, but also apologized for his absence from the meeting which was held in St. Kitts on Thursday.

“We recognised that it is your first visit and you would have had a busy day in St. Kitts yesterday,” the Premier commented. “I do apologise for not having been able to come over yesterday, but we had other things which we had scheduled here which could not be changed, and I want to extend the apology on behalf of other members who might have been there.”

The Premier told the ambassador that he was very satisfied with the relationship between his government and the United States, adding, “I recognised that we are a part of St. Kitts and Nevis, but I do believe that we in Nevis have a special relationship (with the US), especially as we share not only a common historic heritage, but also we share the knowledge that we have in common, Alexandra Hamilton.”

He also welcomed the assistance which the US government and its people have given to the island of Nevis over the years, through USAID and recently through the support it has given Nevis by providing assistance in fighting against money laundering and criminal activities by enhancing the support for the police force.

“I think you have been very helpful and very supportive in that area and we appreciate the support which you have given to us.  We look forward to our continued good relations and our own support for your government in the fight against international terrorism and criminal activity because I think we want to be a part of that international fight against crime and we want to ensure that Nevis remains a place of peace and tranquility,” said Premier Amory.
