Basseterre, St.Kitts (February 9th 2010):- Newly elected Constituency #8 representative the Hon. Eugene Hamilton has labeled a recent court challenge brought against him by his defeated opponent Cedric Liburd as nothing more than harassment.
Liburd has challenged the election of Hamilton on the grounds that he was not qualified to be elected on Nomination Day .
The PAM Deputy Political Leader was served with the suit on Friday last which called for his election on Jan 25th to be null and void on the basis of his alledged dual-citizenship status.
The suit has come as a huge surprise as Hamilton has never been under any scrutiny concerning his citizenship status. Hamilton however sees the suit as no surprise as he has been the target of a smear campaign unlike any ever seen before in the history of SKN politics and this latest challenge only crowns what has been a relentless attack on his character.
“The claim and the challenge brought by my defeated opponent Mr. Cedric Liburd and the Labour party in my view is frivolous , vexatious and ridiculous and is simply a further attempt to continue the relentless smear campaign that was unleashed on me in the lead up to the elections," said Hamilton. "Cedric Liburd and the Labour party orchestrated the most elaborate and vicous smear campaign ever to be waged against any political candidate in St.Kitts-Nevis and despite their absolute best efforts it did not work as I was duly elected on Jan 25th. However it seems that their failure to dirty my name has only served to motivate them to try in some way to bring me down so they are now resorting to what I can only describe as harassment with this latest ridiculous and frivolous claim of dual-citizenship,” Hamilton continued.
“I have never lived in the US or paid taxes in the US and that is why I can only describe the challenge as harassment,” said Hamilton. “I hope Mr. Liburd and the Labour Party are prosecuted , reprimanded or sanctioned to the nth degree by the court for wasting my time and the time of the courts over this ridiculous and frivolous suit,” Hamilton continued.
Despite the labour party’s unprecedented airlift of thousands of people including nationals and non-nationals who were heavily concentrated in his constituency#8 as well as an overwhelming number of election irregularities and fraud that was orchestrated by the Labour Party, Hamilton was able to win his seat with the highest number of votes by any candidate in the 2010 Jan 25th Elections.
