BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- JAMAICAN reggae singer Buju Banton, who is currently behind bars in Florida facing drug and conspiracy charges, recently had his trial date pushed back to April instead of March.
The singer, born Mark Anthony Myrie in 1973, was arrested at his Tamarac home in South Florida after Federal Agents accused him of negotiating with undercover agents to purchase five or more kilograms of cocaine in Sarasota, Florida.
According to popular Jamaican website YardFlex.com, Buju’s attorney David Markus said the case was re-scheduled to ensure that it continues without interruption.
“It has been pushed back because there were so many conflicts. The prosecution’s agent will be having a baby in March, and April 12 is the only date convenient for all parties,” Markus stated.
Many fans of the reggae singer are under the impression that he was set-up, however, the federal agents claim to have footage showing the artiste tasting cocaine in a federally controlled warehouse.
Buju is known for hits such as ‘Tribal War’, ‘Bogle’, ‘Willy, Don’t be silly’, ‘Sleepless Nights’, ‘Magic City’ and ‘I Rise’. The latter two come from his 2009 Grammy-nominated album, ‘Rasta Got Soul’.
