GIS Press Release

Tortola, VI - Sewage overflows are not a new problem in the territory, but the Water and Sewerage Department’s goal continues to be zero overflows. The Water and Sewerage Department’s mission is to keep the territory’s wastewater collection and treatment systems in good working order. We are therefore committed to investing time and resources to stop overflows.

The Water and Sewerage Department is therefore pleased to announce that a sewage challenge in the Purcell Estate on Tortola has been rectified. A damaged sewer main in the area, which caused sewage overflows and strong foul odors was repaired.

On Friday, 5th February, 2010 work commenced in the area between Brewley’s Superette and the junction at Caribbean Transport Limited in the Purcell area. This emergency repair was necessary to alleviate these challenges in this area. The repair was completed on Saturday, 6th February 2010.

The Government of Premier Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal will be announcing in the coming weeks a date for sewerage works to commence in Road Town and East End to correct the sewerage challenges in those areas.
