Sandwich thief awaits sentencing

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CONFESSED sandwich thief, Valentine Graham, could be given a chance for reform later today (Feb. 11), when he is likely to be directed to serve community service instead of a custodial sentence for his crime.

The 38-year old was brought before His Lordship Justice Francis Belle on January 20 on the charge of “building breaking and larceny”, and eventually admitted his wrongdoing.

According to the facts of the case, Graham broke into the secured kitchen of the Joseph N. France General Hospital and stole 13 cheese sandwiches, a packet of crackers, cheese and a kitchen towel.

Graham was subsequently caught by police officers that were patrolling the area. While in their custody, he told them hunger was the motive behind his actions.

His explanation before the court, however, was that he was “going through a phase” in his life and in effort to cope, he resorted to alcohol consumption.  That fateful night, as he explained, his alcohol consumption was excessive and as a result he “lost control”.

Throwing himself at the mercy of the court, Graham said he knows what he did was wrong and that he is in need of assistance in coping with his problems.

At the first leg of his sentencing hearing held this morning, Graham summoned two individuals who, should he be given a non-custodial sentence, would ensure that he is gainfully employed and has a place of residence.

Samantha Huggins, Graham’s sister, assured His Lordship that her brother would reside with her should a non-custodial sentence be imposed.  Daughter of the owner of fast-food restaurant ‘Uncle T’s’, Cherisse Gumbs said Graham has worked for her family before and they are willing to offer him gainful employment if released.

His Lordship indicated that, according to the Graham’s Social Inquiry Report, there are some concerns expressed by the probation officer concerning where Graham would reside and work if he were to be released back into society.

This afternoon, His Lordship, considering recommendations provided by the Probation Department, is expected to pass sentence on Graham, which is likely to include community services to be carried out at the venue of the offence.
