Community Cricket Sunday League wraps successful first season

By: Ryan Haas, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE inaugural season of the Community Cricket Sunday League came to a successful close this past Sunday (Feb. 14) with an all-star clash between Alfred Hendrickson’s XI and Jacque Taylor’s XI.

Begun in November of 2009, the Community Cricket Sunday League is the brainchild several cricket enthusiasts from the Molineux area, including league President Ganesh Algu, who wanted to help in the revival of community cricket throughout St. Kitts.

The all-star conclusion was a fast paced Twenty20 match that saw Taylor’s XI emerging victorious in a comfortable six wicket victory.

Hendrickson’s side won the toss and chose to bat first, but was troubled throughout their order. Hendrickson and opener Daren Hobson suffered ducks in the early going, while Manzel Saunders suffered the same fate further down the line.

Leroy Maynard top-scored for Hendrickson’s XI with 21, while Alphanzo Daniel (18) and Enrique Daniel (15) had a strong early partnership to keep the squad in contention.

The side eventually reached a total of 122/all out from 18.2 overs after an all around good bowling performance from Taylor’s XI, with Welton Edwards (2 for 26), Kareem Kelly (2 for 14) and Akeem Saunders (2 for 21) leading the attack.

Taylor’s had a comfortable reply thanks to determined half-century from opener Don ‘Dango’ Farrell, while substantial support also came from Lester Morrishaw’s 17 and Esroy Powell’s 16.

The winning run was cracked by Boston Thomas, whose four pushed Taylor’s to a winning total of 126/4 from 18.3 overs.

Farrell was named the Man of the Match for his 54 from 49 balls with eight fours and one six.
Following the match, several league awards were handed out to the teams, players and fans for their efforts and support throughout the brief but very exciting season.

Willful Skillful was presented with an EC $1000 cheque from TDC and a trophy as the championship team in the league, while the runner-up Over 45 received EC $500. Leon Clarke also received awards for the most runs scored (208) and Man of the Series 2010.

Elvin Berridge received a trophy from Farrell’s Canvas for Most Wickets in the League with eight. Other prizes were donated by the Indo Carib Shop, Kharibana and Digicel.

All six of the participating teams were praised for their efforts in making the league a success and for helping to highlight the love of cricket that abounds at the community level in St. Kitts.
