PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - JW and Blaze dethroned Fay-Ann Lyons at the International Power Soca Monarch, while Shurwayne Winchester won the Groovy Soca Monarch on February 12.
JW and Blaze, who are both radio hosts in Trinidad, won the competition with their song ‘Palance’.
Lyons placed second with ‘True lies’, Shal Marshall and Screws placed third with ‘Police’ and in fourth place was Tallpree with ‘Wicked Jab’.
According to www.trinidadexpress.com, JW and Blaze scored 81 points with their jubilant performance of ‘Palance’, which had a large portion of the 20,000 plus audience jumping, moving left to right and singing along as the radio personalities frolicked on stage.
Shurwayne Winchester’s ‘Murdah’ won him the Groovy Soca Monarch title for a third time.
Last year’s winner, Lyons, placed second with ‘Start Wining’, Rikki Jay placed third with ‘Barman’ and in fourth place was Patrice Roberts with ‘Wuk it’.
The radio personalities are now looking forward to winning the Road March competition as well. The event also featured guest appearances by reigning National Chutney-Soca Monarch Ravi B, Bunji Garlin and David Rudder who sang in tribute to the people of Haiti.
