THE VALLEY, Anguilla – THE wind of change has blown over the British overseas territory Anguilla, as the Anguilla United Movement (AUM) led by former Chief Minister Hubert Hughes emerged victorious in the February 15 elections.

The elections saw about 20 candidates contesting for seven districts to represent the people of Anguilla in the House of Assembly.  The AUM was able to secure four of the seven districts while the Anguilla United Front claimed two districts.

In District One, AUF’s Othlyn Vanterpool claimed about 30.8% of the votes with Palmavon Webster of the Anguilla Progressive Party (APP) taking 19.2%. In Sandy Hill (District Two) APP’s Jerome Roberts won by 42 votes more than the AUF’s 221 votes in that area. District three was retained by the AUF as Valley North voters elected Evans Rogers over the independent Sutcliffe Hodge. Hodge put up a good fight however and came within 25 votes of victory.

AUM got much support on the western side of the island, where they contested Districts Four, Five, Six and Seven.  Evan Gumbs of AUM claimed 53.6% of the votes in Valley South (District Four). Votes also rolled in for AUM’s Edison Baird, who won 63.5% of the votes in Road North, more than doubling the 236 votes won by AUF’s Delsic Rey.

In District Six, Hubert Hughes of AUM was announced winner with 504 votes and District Seven was brought home for AUM by Walcott Richardson.

Results were taken from the Anguilla House of Assembly 2010 Elections website. Final results are expected to be made available shortly and the official announcement of representatives will follow.
