BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE General Post Office expanded the scope of its service by opening of a brand new post office in Tabernacle yesterday (Feb. 16).
Postmaster General Sandra Davoren told SKNVibes that although she recognizes the challenges to postal services, the opening of the new facility would be an ideal platform to launch new and advanced services.
“The opening of the new post office speaks volumes for us because in a day like today, when Information Technology is presenting a number of challenges for us, we find that we must be on the cutting edge. We cannot just do things traditionally and so we are now going to have the entire postal sector on a new technological platform by providing new services,” Davoren noted.
Plans to update the services of the post offices are in the pipeline. These include real time money transfer, real time bill payments, mobile phone replenishments, e-government services, event ticket sales, package tracking and other electronic transaction processing services.
In addressing the audience at yesterday’s opening ceremony, Constituency Representative for the area Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris said the nation has seen an overall improvement in communication and post in recent times, adding that the Tabernacle Post Office will certainly improve the village and its surrounding environs.
“The Tabernacle Post Office was conceived out of the necessity to enhance Constituency Seven with modern services and amenities that are required to empower and bring it in line with the overall developmental thrust of the Federation,” Harris said.
Harris said he is advised that in time the operations of the post office would make available several products and services to the people of his area including rental of mail boxes, delivery of registered letters and cashing of Social Security cheques. In addition, the Tabernacle Post Office will offer for sale a full array of stamps in the various denominations, as they are available in Basseterre.
The constituency representative thanked Blossom Seaton of Tabernacle, who has served the community faithfully as the local post mistress.
