FAIRBANKS, AK - Alaska Nanooks junior forward Nashorn Maynard (Saint Paul's, Saint Kitts) was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week for the week ending February 14.

Maynard scored 59 points and also had 22 rebounds in 12 and 11-point losses to Central Washington and Western Washington.  Maynard shot 60% (21-of-35) from the field, while also shooting 85% (17-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Maynard set a new career high with 30 points in Saturday’s loss to Western Washington going 11-of-19 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.  He also grabbed 12 rebounds, 11 of them on the offensive glass.  The 11 offensive rebounds was only one off the GNAC record for offensive rebounds in a game set by Stanley Ratcliff of Western Oregon in 2006.

With his 30 points against Western Washington Maynard became the seventh GNAC player, and third Nanook, to record 30 points in a game.  Maynard nearly earned back-to-back 30 point games by scoring 29 points on Thursday against Central Washington.

On the season, Maynard ranks second in the GNAC in rebounding, pulling down 8.6 a game, while also checking in 14th in scoring averaging 13.1 points per game.  He also ranks second in blocked shots a game (1.3), fourth in steals (4.0) and 10th in free throw shooting (80%).

Maynard is the first Nanooks men’s basketball player to win the Player of the Week award since Emmanuel Jenkins (Tacoma, WA) in December 2008.

The Nanooks are currently 6-14 overall, 1-9 in the GNAC and return to action on Thursday when they travel to Lacey, WA to take on Saint Martin’s University before traveling to Monmouth, OR to take on Western Oregon on Saturday night.
