Press Release

Basseterre, St Kitts- The St Kitts Teachers’ Union is mourning the loss of Mr Hillary Hunkins, former president of the union.  SKTU President, Ron Dublin-Collins, has issued a statement on behalf of the union on the passing of Mr Hunkins.

President Collins has stated that “the teachers’ fraternity is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Hunkins.  Today the thoughts of our teachers are with the family and friends of Mr Hunkins.   His contribution to the teaching profession has left an indelible mark on our nation, and the achievements realized throughout his leadership have improved the lives of teachers for years to come. His leadership and passion will be sorely missed.

Mr Hunkins served two consecutive terms as President.  Under his leadership, he passionately advocated for a collective bargain agreement, awards to teachers, creating career path for teachers and the overall improvement in the working conditions of teachers in St Kitts.  President Hunkins was instrumental in recruiting young blood into the union and successfully fought for official recognition of the Union as the bargaining agent for teachers in St. Kitts.  During his presidency, the union was able to put in place a structured grievance procedure.

In speaking with Mr Hunkins’ wife, President Collins expressed words of condolences to the family and has assured them of the prayerful support of the Union.  Mr Hunkins was also a high school remedial teacher, whose last teaching position was at the Basseterre High School.  He will be sadly missed by his union brethren.”
