GIS Press Release

Road Town, Tortola -  Plans have been announced for the Territory’s observance of International Women’s Day on March 8.

Head of Gender Affairs Miss Patricia Hackett told the Department of Information and Public Relations that a week of activities is being planned, starting with a grand social event in the Noel Lloyd/Positive Action Movement Park on Sunday, March 7. During that activity, she added, women and men will be showcasing their talents in poetry, drama, song, dance and a hat parade.

“Other activities include a visit to the female prison, educational health sessions, a symposium, a message by the Minister of Health and Social Development and appearances on the Almanac on radio station ZBVI,” she said.

This year’s observance in the Territory is spearheaded by the Office of Gender Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Social Development, and an inter-agency committee. The theme for 2010 is “Equal Opportunities for Women and Men: Progress for All”, while the United Nations’ theme this year is: Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All. International Women’s Day was first observed in 1911.

Each year on 8 March, hundreds of International Women's Day events occur around the world. The events range from small random informal gatherings to large-scale highly organised events. All celebrate women's advancement and highlight the need for continued vigilance and action against discrimination.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development aspires to provide leadership that promotes health, social wellbeing, and a safe environment as positive resources for living and sustainable development of the Territory.
