BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE dominance of Blue House was maintained on Thursday (Feb. 25) as they emerged victorious at the 43rd Basseterre Senior High School (BHS) Sports Day with a total of 1 430.5 points.

Blue House led in the pre-Sports events, but was closely trailed by Red, Orange and Green House, making it one of the most keenly contested Sports Days at BHS in recent history.

“Any house can definitely win it come Sports Day. It will go to the one that strategizes best and really wants it the most,” BHS Head Coach Alexis Morris told SKNVibes in an interview prior to Sports Day.

Morris’ prediction did indeed come true as the athletes in the various classes were highly competitive throughout the day and delivered a good showing for the parents and supporters who turned up for the event.

Keresa Eddy of Blue House stunned Orange House favorite Shenella Mitchum in the Class 4 Girls as she defeated her by five points for the class title.

The eventual champions also went on to win the Class 1 Boys and Girls divisions thanks to Navada Blanchard and Sherizan Williams, respectively, who each finished the day with 31 points.

Blue House also had good returns from Valishah Lindsay, Alkronus Bridgewater and Cannigia Lewis, who all earned runner-up spots in their respective divisions.

Orange House ended the day as runner-up with a total of 1 368 points. Apart from Mitchum’s strong performances, Savaughn Boston took the Class 4 Boys category with 29 points and Kimberly Hodge won the Class 3 Girls division with 21 points.  Wazim Howe also added 14 points to Orange’s total as he tied for runner-up in the Class 3 Boys.

Green House finished closely behind Orange with a total of 1 345.5 points as they dominated the Class 2 categories thanks to Shanice Murraine, 24 points, in the girls and Brenton Skeete, 21 points, in the boys.

Meanwhile, Red House struggled in the junior divisions and would end the day in last place with 1 337 points. Red had a single champion in Class 3 male Dahjal Maloney, but also did very well in the Class 1 competitions as Ahmad Nicholls and Aliquah Patrick took the runner-up positions in the Boys and Girls, respectively.

The Victrix Ludorum Award went to Shenella Mitcham, who narrowly edged out Keresa Eddy by five points overall at the end of the day, while Navada Blanchard claimed Victor Ludorum by a mere three points over Yannich Henderson of Red House.

In all, the close competition displayed at BHS’s Sports Day could be a good sign for them as they now begin to prepare for the TDC/Coca-Cola/LIME Interschool Championships next month at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Stadium.

Having been defeated last year at Interschools on the silver medal count by the eventual champion Sandy Point High School, Morris said that his athletes, particularly the juniors, are going to be focused on regaining the title.

“[Defeating Sandy Point at Interschools] would have been our goal from the start. Our real aim is winning the championship that slipped away from us last year. As soon as Sports Day is done we will put our heads together and get the best possible team for Basseterre.”
