BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FROM a possible 110 points, Zionshaw Joseph tallied 93.72 to be crowned this year’s Miss Back 2 Roots at a show held on Friday evening (Feb. 26) at Carnival Village.

The Miss Back 2 Roots is a show organised by the History Club of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College which commemorates with Black History Month and features female students of the institution competing in Introductory Speech, Talent, Creative Wear and African Wear.

Joseph outshone her competitors and won the awards for Best Speech, Best Talent and Best Creative Wear, while Jascur Hobson was the First Runner-up with 77.86 points and Coleen Fyfield taking the Second Runners-up position with 73.92 points.

The winner of the Best African Wear award went to Tivanna Richards and the other contestants were Shemoy Wyatt and Kerchelle Harris.
Joseph told SKNVibes she was very pleased with the results and that her hard work has paid off.

“I feel that all my hard work and early morning practices paid off seeing that I entered the show very late,” she said.
Joseph explained that for her Introductory Speech she sought to educate the audience about a particular slave.

“In my speech, I spoke about a slave name Betto Douglas. She was denied her freedom so she escaped one night. I thought to educate the audience about her because I think many are not familiar with that particular slave,” she said.

During the Talent segment, Joseph gave a dramatic presentation based on Haiti. She spoke about the richness of the country and how it became poor because the inhabitants had to pay for their freedom from France. She also spoke about the recent earthquake tragedy.

She also drummed and spoke Creole during her talent performance. Her creative wear was made out of banana leaves that were sprayed gold. Joseph was crowned by Davina Cranstoun-Doras the 2009-2010 Miss Back 2 Roots.
