BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CAYON High School’s Sports Day late last week showed a great deal of promise for the school as they head toward this month’s Interschool Championships, particularly from Victor and Victrix Lodorum, Dajour Richards and Shekola Wilson.
Richards of Blue House and Wilson of Gold House were each highly favoured in their divisions and delivered on Sports Day by winning every race they participated in.
Richards is an especially exciting prospect for the school as they head toward Interschools. Not only did he win the Class 4 males division for Blue House on Sports Day, but he also broke the 100m, 200m and 400m school records for his age grouping.
Wilson, meanwhile, did not win her class on overall points, but has proven to be a serious contender as one of the Federation’s top distance runners.
Apart from the Victor and Victrix, the Cayon athletes on a whole put on a good display for their family, fans and supporters that turned up for the event and showed a great deal of promise ahead of Interschools.
Kevaun Isaac stepped up for Green House in a big way at the competition and emerged as the Class 3 males champion after having broken the 100m and 400m school records. He was joined by house-mate Jeron Herbert, who broke the 400m record in the Class 1 males and would eventually win that division.
The relays were also a source of records toppling as the Red House junior boys broke the 4 x 100m record and the senior boys of Green House surpassed the previous mark in the 4 x 400m.
Class 2 male Shaquiel Henry of Green House was also named champion and completed a nearly clean sweep for the house that was reminiscent of its glory days.
The female class champions were more evenly spread among the houses, with Lynelcia Bass and Kacey Decosta of Gold taking Class 4 and Class 3, respectively, while Krystal Archibald of Blue House took Class 2 and Shakiela Butler of Red House topped Class 1.
Red House came into Sports Day leading in overall points and was able to maintain their margin over the competition with a final total of 1363 points. Gold House took second with 1211.5 points and Green House held onto third position with 1152.
Despite the outstanding performance of Richards, Blue House could only grab 127 points on Sports Day and finished in fourth with a final total of 1116.5.
Speaking to SKNVibes, Head of the Cayon High School Sports Department Basil Williams said that he believes Cayon will field a good team at this year’s Interschool Championships and should improve their performance overall from the 2009 competition.
“Last year was a rebuilding year. This year we are setting a minimum goal of 10 gold medals. We are looking to do some damage in the throws. Right now our sprints are not at the point that we would want them to be, but we still have some training to go and I think we can get there,” he said.
