BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FANS should expect a highly competitive Sports Day from the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) tomorrow (Mar. 4), as track and field coach Donnell Esdaille has stated there is no clearly leading House coming into the event.
“This year we think that at Sports Day it will be much more competitive than in years past because we find this year that all of the houses are on a level playing field in terms of the points. There is no clear indicator of who might be the winner,” Esdaille said in an interview with SKNVibes.
While Red House had emerged as the winner of pre-Sports with a total of 186 points, Orange House is the current overall leader with 1189 points and they are trailed very closely by Blue House, which has 1187 points.
“It will definitely bring a level of excitement to the meet because of how competitive it is,” Esdaille said.
He also noted that WAHS has a number of class champions from last year’s Sports Day who will be returning tomorrow to prove their meddle once again.
“In terms of athletes to watch, we still have a couple of class champions from last year. We have Josiah Oyebefon, Shenel Crooke and Travelka Bloice. They are still competing and ones that we are definitely going to look for come Sports Day.
“We also have a number of young athletes in the first form that we think might be coming out in this current Sports Day,” he said.
While the coach admitted that the training from some of the more casual athletes has been “somewhat haphazard” due to their involvement in other extra-curricular activities, he said that he still expects them to compete to the best of their abilities on Sports Day. Contrarily, he said that WAHS’ dedicated track and fielders have been training very hard and should do well at Sports Day and beyond.
When asked if he believed WAHS could be a real contender at this month’s TDC/Coca-Cola/LIME Interschool Championships, Esdaille said that he believes, having attended Basseterre High School’s Sports Day, the eventual WAHS team should be “very competitive”.
“We saw some athletes there that we were watching and that is why I think we are going to be competitive, because we think we can fair well against those that we saw. Of course, we didn’t see the field events…but from what we saw we think that we could be very competitive.
“I’m not into predicting winning or losing, but once we have the right athletes in place…there is a very high possibility that we could win the meet,” he stated.
Esdaille encouraged the general public at large to turn up for tomorrow’s Sports Day and witness a very close race between all of the Houses.
