Sports Day or Dress-up Day?

Sports Day or Dress-up Day?
By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SINCE the start of the current sports term, many people have been commenting about the lack of participation from the students during the pre-sports events and on Sports Day.

Some people are of the view that the students are currently more interested in other things, such as ‘dressing up’ on sports day, and no longer want to participate in the athletic events.

SKNVibes PEP took the opportunity to speak with a few students from various schools, who actively participated on sports days in the recent past, to find out why they are no longer doing so.

The first was 3A4 student Kyle, who said, “Me is a big man now, run for ‘wah’ sports.”

Tiara of 4A1 said, “I am getting too fat for running.” And Jahida of the same form said she is no longer interested in running.

“My mother does not want me to run no more,” said a fourth former name Roniecia. Kenseisha, who is also a fourth former but of another school, said, “I am not doing anything for the school, the teachers them not nice”.

“I want to dress down and come sports look good like everybody else,” said Tishari; while Deshawn declared, “I have to come sports with my boys to watch the girls them who come sports dress sexy.”

A fifth form student name Candice said that she has better things to do, and Ebony of 5A1 noted that she does not feel fit anymore and CXC exams are ‘just around the bend”.

Damian, who claimed to be versed on the topic, said, “Me ‘ain’ no horse, me nar run round no track and me can’t enjoy sports when I a run.”

Latoya of 4A4, who was somewhat saucy, said “Who running for any sports? I buy my clothes to dress up and look hot; running was primary school and first and second forms days.”

Tamika said that in the past she used to be on the track, “but I too big for that now”. The final student was Akeema, who said, “I done with running. Only when sports coming the teachers want to nice us up cause they looking points for their house; then after that they want to treat us like dog. Not me!”

One teacher said most students are focused on other things and feel that they are too big to participate in the annual event. “Therefore the lack of interest has failed and there is no one to encourage them,” she added.

She said there is only so much the school could do, but if the students do not want to participate they would not force them.

Regardless of one’s reason for not participating in the school sports day or any other school event, one must remember that no event can ever be successful without the participation of humans.
