BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MUCH like their counterparts at the Basseterre High School, Washington Archibald High School’s (WAHS) Blue House delivered an all around solid performance yesterday (Mar. 4) to be named the 2010 Sports Day champions.
Blue House had trailed by a mere two points behind leaders Orange House in the overall standing heading into Sports Day. Good strategy and consistent placing across the events, however, proved successful for the eventual champions and they earned Sports Day Runner-Up House with 143 points and overall champion with 1330.
Tarvia Phillip topped the list of the Blue House athletes, emerging as their only class champion this year by taking the Class II Female division title with 26 points.
Orange House managed to finish in second place with an overall point total of 1309, despite finishing last on Sports Day with 120 points. Though the house struggled all around, Ashika Williams did manage to claim the Class III Female title for Orange with 18 points.
Green House also finished Sports Day with a single class champion in the form of Class III male Corey Francis, who garnered 21 points from his races. Green managed to finish in third on Sports Day, but did not gather enough points to pull them out of last in the overall standings.
The stars of the day, however, came from Red House as they proved nearly unbeatable and easily won Sports Day with 202 points. The strong performance unfortunately did not gain enough ground to make up for their performance in the pre-Sports Day heats and win the overall championship.
From Red House, Nadiv Mills was named the Class II male champion, Travelka Bloice took the Class I female title and Xavier Fahie claimed the top spot in the Class I males.
Though the overall title eluded them this year, Mills and Bloice still gave major bragging rights to Red House after being named the Victor and Victrix Lodorum, respectively.
WAHS track and field coach Donnell Esdaille informed SKNVibes that the school is looking forward to this year’s TDC/Coca-Cola/LIME Interschool Championships and will begin training their team immediately now that Sports Day is completed.
“We already have our coaching staff in place for Interschool. Once Sports Day is completed and we have the final draft of the team, we are going to start full-time training from Monday.
“The most balanced team will win [the Interschool Championships] and I am going to prepare a very balanced team,” Esdaille said. “We are going to go with a full team and compete in as many events as possible. I can guarantee that. That’s our plan.”
