CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - A cross section of representatives of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, Nevis Chapter, on Monday (Mar. 8) donated  an EC$10 000 cheque to the Nevis Single Parent Support Group at a ceremony held at the High Court in Nevis.

Dahlia Joseph, Chair of the St. Kitts and Nevis Sub-committee, handed over the cheque to Rhonda Williams, a member of the Single Mothers Group. The Group is coordinated by the Social Services Department, Ministry of Social Development, Nevis.

Speaking during the ceremony, the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association Vice-President, Theodore Hobson,  said a total of EC$20 000 was raised at a pre-Christmas Dinner and Ball and Silent Auction held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on Friday, December 11, 2009. He noted that the other half of the money raised was donated to Diamonds in the Rough, a mentoring support programme for fifth form students at the Washington Archibald High School in St. Kitts.

Hobson said the Single Parents Group was a worthy cause, and Sandra Maynard, Director Social Services on Nevis, who was instrumental in the formation of the group, welcomed the contribution and told the gathering that the donation was timely, particularly in a recession period. “Many single parents will benefit from this sincere kindness,” she said.

Williams, on behalf of the Single Mothers Group, said the members meet every third Monday to discuss issues and share experiences. She informed that members of the group have also benefited from many educational sessions, while throwing out an invitation to single men and single fathers to join the group.

Earlier, Hobson said that the association had requested Joseph to follow up on the group and advise its members on various legal issues. He noted that the association is comprised of four committees – Legislative, Civil Rules, Education and a St. Kitts/Nevis Committee.

Hobson thanked the younger members of the Bar Association for the creative ideas which he noted would go a long way in revitalising the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association is headed by Charles Wilkin (President), Vice President Theodore Hobson, Secretary/Treasurer Anthony Gonsalves and members Patricia Dublin and Fitzroy Eddy.
