AGAPE total life captures general knowledge championship title

    Road Town, Tortola- Agape Total Life Academy last night captured the 2010 Inter-Primary School General Knowledge Quiz championship title with a score of 20 points.

     

    Students Jhaved Jones, Chrisma Williams and Mickalia Mignott of the winning team were thrilled with the victory.

     

    The second placed team, Jost Van Dyke included Robert Isaac, Janecha Chinnery and Davaughn Hodge, with 18 points. The Bregado Flax Educational Centre Primary Division contingent of Kishandra Herbert, Debbieann Stevens and Nayib Clarke captured third place with 15 points.

     

    The other finalists were Francis Lettsome, Althea Scatliffe, Cedar International Robinson O’Neal Memorial, Isabella Morris and Willard Wheatley Primary Schools.

     

    Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Andrew Fahie congratulated everyone for a job well done especially the winners of the quiz. “The quiz was remarkable and I want to congratulate this year’s winners the Agape Total Life Academy for an excellent job,” he said, adding, “All the students performed extremely well and it just shows that once we continue to challenge our children they will continue to move from strength to strength not only in competitions here in the BVI but regionally and internationally.”

     

    Minister Fahie said the quiz was a great community, business and Government initiative. “This is an example of what great things can happen when we work together for the betterment of the students,” he said.

     

    Ms. Ghana Skelton-Smith from Skelton Group of Companies also congratulated the students for their exemplary performance. She told them they have made themselves and their schools proud and they should continue to strive for excellence. She also made an appeal to other private businesses to join and support the Department of Education in these types of educational ventures.

     

    The quiz’s finals consisted of five rounds, with three students representing each school with one as a reserve. The students answered questions from five subject areas Social Studies, English, Mathematics, Science and Current Affairs.

     

    The winners and runners-up were presented with trophies and special awards from the Rotary Club of Road Town. Each finalist received certificates. The general knowledge quiz is part of Education Week activities, which is being celebrated this week under the theme “Improving Education Through Training”.

     

    The Ministry and Department of Education and the Rotary Club of Road Town are jointly sponsoring the 2010 Inter-Primary School General Knowledge Quiz. Additional sponsors include, Alphonso Warner Insurance Company, Skelton Group of Companies, D & B Trucking and Heavy Equipment Services and Rugged Rentals Limited.

     

    The objectives of the general knowledge quiz are to encourage students to reach their fullest potential; to find out how well students are mastering the curriculum and to develop camaraderie and team spirit among students.

    The mission of the Department of Education is to equip learners of all ages with the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to become productive citizens in a rapidly changing society.
