CSS official expects top four finish at Interschool Championships

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – HEAD of the Charlestown Secondary School’s (CSS) Sports Department, Garfield Virgo, has confidently stated following his school’s Sports Day that the teams at this year’s TDC/Coca-Cola/LIME Interschool Championships need to “look out” for the Nevis capital.

“I expect my team to be in the top four this year. We worked very hard this year and we are trying to field as many athletes of potential as possible. Most of them have proven their potential to do well at our sports meet, where eight or nine long-standing school records were broken.

“I just want to tell the other schools to look out because we are coming with a purpose this year,” Virgo told SKNVibes in an exclusive interview.

At the 2009 Interschool Championships, CSS tied with the Washington Archibald High School for fourth place overall on gold medals, but ended up taking fifth after having fewer silvers. One of the strong points of that team was the females, and Virgo said he expects them to return in full force at next weekend’s meet.

“Definitely our strongest is the class three girls. We have 15 strong girls and we expect them to dominate like they did last year. My senior girls should impress as well,” he said.

While some of the team’s top females may be missing for the March 19-21 Interschool Championships due to being called upon for national football, Virgo stated that the team’s benches are still deep with talent like Donella Ward, Anisha Douglas and sisters Romisha Malone and Reneka Daniel among others.

While the Sports Head believes his team is “not as strong” in the under-15 male categories, he said that they were able to “get their feet wet” at this week’s Sports Day and should still perform well for CSS next weekend.

The real strength of the male team for CSS will be centered on athletes such as Royston Queeley, Javid Pemberton, Lawvington Forbes and Kaska Forbes, the latter of which broke both the 800m and 1500m school records at their Sports Day. Virgo revealed that the team would also be bolstered by “new guy on the block” Trevon Nisbett.

The TDC/Coca-Cola/LIME Interschool Championships will be held at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Stadium in Bird Rock, St. Kitts beginning on March 19.

This year’s meet is anticipated to be one of the most closely contested in years across the 11 registered institutions and will also be the first year that the newly opened Saddlers Secondary School will field a team.

It will also be the last chance for the nation’s athletes to qualify for this year’s Carifta Games, which are to be held in the Cayman Islands on April 2-5.
