BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CAPITALIZING on a significant lead after Pre-Sports and good performances at Sports Day, Verchilds High’s Blue House was crowned the school champion last Friday (Mar. 12).
Though Green House was the eventual Sports Day champion with a total of 259 points, Blue came in a close second of 245 points thanks to strong performances all around and were able to maintain their lead in the overall point standings with 1956 points.
Lonzo Wilkinson Jr. in the Class 2 male and Rosalie Pringle in the Class 1 female categories were particularly crucial to Blue’s victory and went on to not only win their classes, but to be named Victor and Victrix Lodorum after earning 61 and 66 points, respectively.
Wilkinson dominated in the 100m, 200m and 400m events, while Pringle took the top spot in all of those races and the 800m and 1500m.
Blue House also showed great strength in the relays, and Wilkinson starred in the Class 2 male’s 4 x 100m as the team set a new school record of 49.42 seconds.
Dequana Liburd was the only other class champion for Blue, taking the Class 3 female division with 44 points after winning the 400m, 800m and 1500m.
Green House otherwise dominated the remaining classes, with Romeo Browne taking the Class 3 Boys, Aldesha Johnson and Sheneka Henry tying in the Class 2 Girls and Aaron Bennire emerging as champion of the Class 1 Boys category.
Red House, meanwhile, finished the day without a class champion, but did their best to remain competitive and finished Sports Day with 135 points.
With solid sprinting performances across the age groupings and some degree of prowess already displayed in the field events at this month’s National Junior Championships, Verchilds High School is poised to bring a solid all around team to this weekend’s TDC/Coca-Cola/LIME Interschool Championships.
In 2009, Verchilds High came in third place behind Sandy Point and Basseterre High Schools at the Interschool Championships, but with each of those schools losing some of their top athletes due to various circumstances many fans are expecting that the race to the title of Interschool Champion very well could go to Verchilds.
