Road Town, Tortola  – His Excellency the Governor David Pearey recognised the invaluable contribution of the volunteers of the Old Government House Museum at a reception held in their honour recently.

The Governor paid tribute to the volunteers for their work and awarded each with a gift and a certificate as a symbol of the Old Government House Board’s deep appreciation.

The Governor shared with the Department of Information and Public Relations that, “At a time when precious help is hard to find, the Old Government House Museum Board is especially privileged to have a group of volunteers offering their invaluable support to the manning of the museum. With its modest budget the museum board is only able to pay for a small permanent staff, in particular its enthusiastic curator, Dora Scatliffe.”

His Excellency added, “With the help of its volunteers, who assist with curating and tours, landscaping, maintenance, decorating and many other functions, this unique historical building is assessable to the many visitors to the Territory and the board is able to plan for its further development. The board is hoping to raise funds to assist in the restoration of the Princess Margaret Room and the refurbishment of the roof.”

Persons interested in becoming a volunteer or making donations towards the Old Government House Museum can contact Mrs. Natalie Fahie-Smith at the Governor’s Office at 494-2345.

The Old Government House Museum was opened in 2003 and features the Quaker Room, Stamp Room and the soon to be unveiled Governor’s Quarters. The museum is managed by a management board appointed by Cabinet. The Governor serves as chairman.
