St. Kitts readies for Primary School Championships this weekend

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 7th annual Rams Primary School Track and Field Championships are keyed up to be held this Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 27-28) at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Stadium.

Though there has been some controversy surrounding the meet due to it being moved from during the week to the weekend, St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA) Public Relations Officer Evris Huggins has promised the public that it will be of the highest caliber and a chance to see many of the nation’s top young athletes compete.

A total of 21 primary schools were invited to the competition by the association, and a raised maximum quota of 50 students per school means that roughly 600 young athletes are expected to be on display during the two day event.

While the Beach Allen Primary School has historically dominated the championship in recent years, last year saw St. Pauls Primary School putting a very substantial crack in that legacy and bringing the trophy home to the heart of Constituency Number Six.

The question remains if St. Pauls would be able to repeat their performance this year, if Beach Allen will regain their championship or if another champion, such as seven-time winner Sandy Point, would claim the top prize.

Events to be contested include the 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4x100m, 4x400m, 1200m, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put (4k) among others.

Regardless of who wins the championship, track and field fans in the Federation are certain to see a good show as many of the athletes will be trying to impress their coaches and meet the selection criteria for the national team that will compete in this year’s Caribbean Union of Teachers Games.

The Rams Primary School Track and Field Championship is slated to begin at 2 p.m. each day and admission prices have been set at EC $5 for children, EC $10 for grounds and EC $20 for the Kim Collins Pavilion.

Additionally, children age 12 and under who are accompanied by an adult to the meet will be admitted free of charge.
