    Dr. David Doyle, Honorary Counsel to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO said that the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis made an impact at the 174th Session of the UNESCO Executive Board Meeting held in Paris France, March 28th to April 13th 2006. 

    The federation of St. Kitts and Nevis was represented by Mr. Antonio Maynard- Secretary General of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO and Ms. Mutryce A. Williams- Business and Marketing Specialist, SSMC Transition Management Office. Dr. Doyle said that the delegates were quite impressive and distinguished themselves as true ambassadors of their country and the wider Caribbean at the highest level of decision-making of UNESCO.
     
    Ms. Mutryce A. Williams sat on the Group of Experts on Financial and Administrative Matters Committee from March 29th to March 31st 2006 with nine other member states including Great Britain, United States, Japan and Columbia. The mandate of the Group of Experts on Financial and Administrative Matters was
     to assist the Finance and Administrative Commission in its work, with a view to increasing its effectiveness, as well as to determine from a strictly technical point of view the administrative and financial aspects of the documents and issues of the Finance and
    Administrative Commission. A budget of approximately US$6.1 billion dollars was evaluated by the Committee. 
     
    On Tuesday 4th April 2006, St. Kitts-Nevis made its first intervention in the Plenary Session. The relevant issues presented by delegate Antonio Maynard were the need to strengthen Caribbean representation at all levels of decision-making within UNESCO, an improvement in Vocational Education and Education For All, the strengthening of UNESCO's National Commission and Cluster Office Relations, Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, Human Resource Management and Employment Opportunities for Caribbean nationals within UNESCO and the two hundredth anniversary of the End of Slave Trade Celebration. Mr. Maynard informed that UNESCO's Director General His Excellency Koichiro Matsuura, acknowledged the issues that were raised by the St. Kitts-Nevis delegation and specifically committed UNESCO's support on the matter of the two hundredth anniversary of the end of the slave trade.
     
    St. Kitts and Nevis was elected to the Executive Board at UNESCO's General Conference held in October 2005 in Paris,

    France. This is the first time in the organization's sixty-years of existence that St. Kitts and Nevis has been elected to the Executive Board. St. Kitts and Nevis commenced its term on the Executive Board of UNESCO in March 2006 and its term will expire on December 2009. The St. Kitts and Nevis delegation would travel to Paris France, biannually during this period to represent the nation, as well as the wider Caribbean.

      The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945. UNESCO promotes international cooperation among its 191 Member States and six Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. UNESCO functions as a laboratory of ideas and a standard setter to forge universal agreements on emerging ethical issues. The Organization also serves as a clearing house "for the dissemination and sharing of information and knowledge" while helping Member States to build their human and institutional capacities in diverse fields.
