| School Students at the 12th Annual Agriculture Open Day | Basseterre, St. Kitts April 28, 2006: The Department of Agriculture 12th Annual Open Day started on April 28th and ended Saturday April 29, 2006. "New Scope, New Opportunities after Sugar" was the theme for the Open Day and Exhibitionthat was held at the on the Grounds of the Department of Agriculture, La Guerite Station. This was a move away from the Fort Thomas Hotel grounds whic was the venue for the Open Day last year.
The operation encompasses livestock, crops, agricultural engineering, and agro-processing a wide variety of work done there is felt all over the country. A large range of vegetables currently being grown by local farmers were on display and for sales which is part of the farmers market. The Kittitian Fruit Plate was on display along with CARDI, IICA and the Taiwanese Mission who displayed their areas of emphasis.
The A
griculture Open Days is of particular value to the public. You will amass sufficient knowledge to ask the right questions to enable you to assess, accurately, the potential of any working unit, regardless of any information given to you by anyone showing you around the unit.
You will also understand the reasons why a unit may not be performing to its target, and how to make an accurate judgement of possible performance and value. Best of all, you will be able to talk on the subject with your peers.
This Open Day and Exhibition is held each year to highlight on-going development in agriculture and to introduce new approaches to the general public. The Open day will end on Saturday with Karaoke, Fashion Show and much more to look forward to.
