Man of allegedly shady character killed in Phillip’s Village

Dirt track leading to Woodley Hill

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – JUST three days after the shooting death of an elderly couple in Half Moon Bay, the lifeless body of a man was found in Phillip’s Village, who was killed by an unknown assailant.

On arrival at the crime scene, SKNVibes learned that the dead man was identified as Elvan Warner of Molineux Village, which was confirmed by Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson.

According to residents of the village, sometime after 7:00 p.m. they were aroused by the sound of gunfire, and on investigating the  lifeless body of Warner was seen lying on the left side of David Road at the entrance of a dirt track leading to Woodley Hill.

The 45-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene by District Medical Officer Dr. Udo.

According to a police release, the scene was processed by the crime scene officers and a number of spent shells were discovered. It also stated that "there are no suspect(s) in custody assisting the police with their investigations as yet. However, investigations are ongoing".

At the time of this media house’s presence at the scene, no family member of the deceased was present and it was observed that no one showed any sign of sorrow.

One resident said that the deceased was known to have spent most of his adult life at Her Majesty’s Prison.

“He was a known thief, but despite the fact he had been living outside the ambit of the law, no one had the right to take his life. Some people may rejoice on hearing of his death, knowing that he was involved with many break-ins. However, he was human and we do not know the circumstances that had led him to become the person he was. I sincerely sympathise with his family and do hope that the police are able to find the person who killed him,” said the resident.

Another resident was highly perturbed over the killing and stated that “too many of our young men are being murdered. It is time that we seek outside assistance. Only a few days ago Tweed was killed, and shortly after two elderly people. St. Kitts and Nevis has a very small population and since the closure of the sugar industry we are heavily dependent on tourism. When tourists hear about our murder rate, what do you think will happen to our economy if they decide to boycott as they did to Antigua?”

Warner’s death has taken the number of homicides committed in the twin-island Federation to 13 for this year; nine on St. Kitts and four on Nevis.
