BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man is currently in custody assisting police with their investigations into the Half Moon Bay double homicide.

According to the Police Press and Public relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, the man was taken into custody shortly after 7:00 on Tuesday evening.

Henderson stated in a release that autopsies were performed on the bodies of James and Mildred Daniel by pathologist Dr. Steven Jones on Monday (Apr. 12).

He also stated that the autopsies revealed both of them died as a result of haemorrhage and shock due to gunshot injuries.

The Daniels, nationals of St. Kitts but who residing in the United Kingdom, were found dead in one of the bedrooms of their newly-constructed Half Moon Bay residence on Sunday, April 11, 2010.

Police reported that the bodies of James and Mildred Daniel, both in their 70s, were in a partly decomposed state and “there were definitely signs of foul play”. The police are treating their deaths as homicide.

James and Mildred were last seen and heard from on Tuesday (Apr. 6) and it was reported by neighbours that a foul stench was emanating from their home. On investigation, police reportedly saw the body of Mildred lying on a bed and that of her husband on the floor beside the bed. A spent shell was also reportedly found in the bedroom.

A niece of James Daniel told this media house that family members are not only perturbed over the manner in which the elderly couple was killed, but they are also of the view that the motive was not robbery.

“This is a terrible blow to the family. It hurts me to know that it was just about three months since my uncle and his wife had moved into the house and had their lives snuffed out like that. Many of us believe that whoever killed them had ulterior motives. It does not seem to be an act of robbery. If the perpetrator of perpetrators motive was to rob them, why is it that they did not take the bag that was in the bedroom which contain a quantity of English and EC currencies?

“Let’s supposed it was robbery and they did not see the bag with the money, why did they shoot my uncle behind his ear and his wife in her chest? Are we to conclude that my uncle and his wife had recognised the person or persons who killed them?”

Meanwhile, Dr. Jones also performed an autopsy on the body of Bradford ‘Braddy’ Tweed on the same day as the Daniels. The results revealed that he too died as a result of haemorrhage and shock due to gunshot injuries.

Tweed, a taxi operator of Branch Street, Basseterre was shot dead in the wee hours of Thursday, April 8 along the island main road in the Keys area.

Tweed’s body was found outside his bus near the front passenger’s wheel lying on the on the grassy verge on the seaside of the road across from Morgan Heights.

Investigations into his death are also ongoing.
