Fashion…What is a no, no?

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WE all have our own unique sense of style in dressing and are free to wear whatever we like and however we like. But, let’s face it, sometimes we women tend to get carried away with certain styles we choose.

We are human and by no means perfect; even I would agree that at times I put on an outfit then when I look back on it, I say to myself, “What on earth was I thinking?”

So, as part of our entertaining topics, SKNVibes PEP is sharing some fashion don’ts. However, I am no fashion expert; therefore, these are only tips. So feel free to accept or reject.

Now ladies, we all know that tights or leggings, whichever we prefer to call them, are the in-thing, but if your belly hangs over the tights or the waist is too tight, which causes one’s belly to be in that position, then that is a no, no. Also, if from the time you put on that tights and you can see all of your lumps and bumps, then that is a no, no.

There is a difference between being thick and being fat. Some of us tend to get that mixed up. But ladies, if you are fat, or should I say ‘big’, then there is no need for you to wear those big high-waist fashion belts that get lost between your love ‘handles’. The belts are complements to outfits, but if it can only be seen in the front where the buckle is, then that is a no, no for you as well.

Let us talk about sandals. We in the Caribbean experience two types of weather – wet and dry –and many of us have made sandals an everyday thing. But why wear sandals and stockings in the club? That is an absolute no, no.

Every woman might not be able to afford a pedicure to have their feet looking nice and neat in sandals, but, come on ladies, at least make sure your toes look decent enough before you step out.

Men! Do not think I am leaving you out. What is it with some of you wearing tighter pants than the females? That is certainly a no, no in my book.

While I am dealing with the men, let me just add another no, no. Your undershirt should not be longer than the shirt above, and bright prints of pictures on your undershirt should not be seen through your upper shirt.

It is always good to keep up with what is in style and what is not, but there are some styles that we as Caribbean people need to understand were made for those residing in North America and other countries due to their changing weather. Take for example legwarmers. There is no need for females to be wearing legwarmers under the blazing sun. Night is preferable, but not in the day. This too is definitely a no, no.

This one applies to both males and females. Silver and gold do not go well together when it comes to accessories; it is either one or the other. Mixing them is a no. And while we are on the topic of accessories, ladies there is no need for a thousand bangles on your hands, making unnecessary noise each time you move.

Finally ladies, the eye shadow. Let us talk about it. The three and four-colour eye shadow is okay if that is your thing and you know how to do it well. But, like me, if you have no idea what you are doing, then there is no need to experiment and end up looking like Bobo the clown.

Fashion can be fun, sexy and wacky but it is also very good to complement your style based, which is certainly based on your body type.
