Road Town, Tortola -  The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) has recently installed a generator at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) to serve as backup power for Government’s secondary site.

The secondary site serves as a failover for Government’s information technology services in the event that the primary location, at the Central Administration Complex (CAC), experiences a disaster or failure. It will also provide backup power to the four computer labs located on the top floor of the new building on the high school’s grounds.

“The Department of Information Technology is proud to have made this contribution to the Elmore Stoutt High School, which houses hardworking students and staff who deserve a reliable computer network,” said the Director of DoIT, Mrs. Anna-Belle Skelton-Malone.

She added, “In the past, computers have shut down on students in the middle of their exams. Now, with the generator installed, Information Technology teachers and students on the top floor of the new building would not have to worry themselves with such matters.”

“The department also feels more secure that there will be network coverage if a problem arises with our servers and other equipment at the main site, located at the CAC,” said the Director.

Acting Computing and Communications Officer, Mr. Claudius Rymer said, “The generator will power what is known as the secondary site, which is a backup location for Government’s information technology equipment. The school and some Government offices also connect to this site.”

He explained, “If for whatever reason the power goes off, the newly installed generator will kick in and keep the computers, servers and other network devices running.”
DoIT hired Engineer, Mr. Harrinanan Yamraj, to design and build the generator to meet certain specifications.

Mr. Yamraj explained, “The generator was designed with the safety of students in mind. It is electronic, which saves on fuel; has emission control so there is little exhaust, and also has a very low noise level, so it won’t disturb the students while they are working.”

The installation of the generator is in line with the mission of the Department of Information Technology, which is to provide a competitive edge to all Government departments through the creative use of information technology and services, enabling them to deliver efficient and effective services to the Virgin Islands community.
