BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LAST week SKNVibes PEP ran a story titled “Why do men lie to women?” Some men were disturbed by the article; they found it sexist and made comments such as “Men aren’t the only ones who lie” and “Some women are bigger liars”.
It was never my intention to make women seem like saints and men evil big-time liars. Therefore, in fairness to both genders, SKNVibes PEP went out and asked a number of women -
“Why do women lie to men?”
A 25-year-old was straight to the point when she said, “I don’t know about other women but I lie to avoid confrontation.”
Keneida responded saying, “Most of the time I don’t lie because I have to but rather to hold back the truth for the right time to reveal it and to play dumb with men, because the truth will cause a lot of trouble. So to avoid conflict we lie.” The truth hurts she added.
Alicia said, “Woman lie to men for many reasons. It could be she lies for her happiness with someone else or she lies to him because he often lies to her and thinks she is unaware.”
“I would say women lie to men because we fear their reaction…that’s one. We also lie because it sounds better to lie to someone to make them feel good to cover our tracks, because telling the truth may destroy lives and relationships. And there are also some ladies who lie because it makes them look good in a situation,” said Karessa, a mother of two.
One woman who preferred to remain nameless said, “People can’t handle the truth and some men tend to get aggressive when things are not going their way. Some men spend their entire life thinking all women bad, likewise women with men. So, sometimes it’s not that you want to lie but just because you don’t want to be classed with every other woman, you lie in order not to disappoint them.”
Miss Lady in her 30s said women and men lie for the same reasons; to spare feelings. “The bottom line is, we all lie,” she added.
A 22-year-old receptionist said, “I lie to men because they lie to us. I like to play tit-for-tat. Most men think they can say and do anything and be forgiven, so why can’t women too? We all lie for whatever reason, but everybody knows a woman can tell a more convincing lie than most men. Most men lie and the lies they tell make no sense.”
“Men deserve to be lied to because they too ‘mumu’. They lie to us all the time, so whenever I lie to a man I don’t feel bad. It’s just another lie; there doesn’t have to be a reason,” said a laughing Javanna.
A lie is called a prevarication or falsehood; it is a type of deception in the form of an untruthful statement, especially with the intention to deceive others.
