(Basseterre, St. Kitts) Several licensing and traffic cases appeared before the Magistrate Court on Thursday May 4, where they were heard before Magistrate Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe. Among the cases was that of Virgil Gumbs owner of P6263 who answered to three charges.
He was charged for driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after being involved in an accident and for parking on a yellow line.
The first incident of which he was tried for occurred on December 1, 2005, while Gumbs was driving in the St. Peters area.
Gumbs overtook another driver of which while doing so collided with the vehicle. According to the Police Prosecutor, Gumbs failed to remain at the accident, and was difficult to get a hold of, hence the charges brought before him.
Gumbs plead guilty to three of the charges and said that he already worked out a deal with the other driver.
"I don't know what I do the police," Gumbs said in court. "I was not hard to find, and I spoke with the person about fixing the damage and left, and after that I left."
"I think the police has a problem with me," he continued. "The police jealous me and there are a lot of stupid people in this world."
Gumbs also said that the other charge of him being on a yellow line, he knows nothing about.
"I'm a human not a murderer, and once people don't like you they make up charges against you and I believe the police have something against me," he said.
Magistrate Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe told Gumbs before his sentencing that he had previous traffic offences.
She sentenced him to pay a fine of $250 in one week for careless driving and $100 for failing to stop in one week or face one week in prison. Gumbs is scheduled to appear in court next week Thursday May 11 to answer other charges.
