BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 2010 Miss Culture Queen Pageant, which will be held in Nevis as part of the Culturama celebrations, will be taking a new look as the popular Swimsuit Competition will be excluded from this year’s show.
Instead, more emphasis would be placed on the cultural aspect of the pageant.

According to a release issued by the new Chairperson of the Miss Culture Queen Committee, Nicole Williams-Lawrence, the Committee felt that the Miss Culture Queen Pageant is intended for intelligent, culturally aware, poised young ladies seeking a platform for their contribution to the development of Nevis.

“We also believe that in the Ms. Culture Queen Pageant physical appearance plays a role in the selection process but the emphasis will be on awareness of the cultural and current events, community involvement, personality and talent.

“In this regard, we have sought to separate the Swimsuit segment from the Ms. Culture Queen Pageant and to incorporate a Ms. Culture Swimwear Pageant in place of the Swimwear Segment of the Ms. Culture Queen Show. The new format will involve two shows - the Ms. Culture Swimwear and Ms. Culture Queen Pageant,” she stated.

The release stated that the Miss Culture Swimwear is intended for young ladies with an interest in fashion modelling and would involve four segments: the Fanfare, One-piece Swimwear, Two-piece Swimwear and a Creative Wear made from any material, including plastic or paper, and would be in tribute to their sponsor.

The Miss Culture Queen Pageant will involve five appearances: the Fanfare, Promotional Speech, Talent, Cultural Evening Wear and Interview.

“The Sub-committee proposes that the Cultural Evening Wear will be made by local designers in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, who will compete for an award of top designer. The contestants will have the opportunity to participate in a draw for the designer who will design and make their cultural evening wear,” stated Lawrence in the release.

Lawrence said that the Committee is offering pageants that would cater to all types of women, as there have been contestants who entered the pageant and not necessarily interested in the Swimwear segment, while there were some who were aspiring models and wanted to showcase their modelling skills.

She said that eight contestants, four each island, would compete in the Miss Culture Swimsuit Pageant while a total of six contestants will vie for the Miss Culture Queen Pageant, which would also include a contestant from St. Kitts.

The identities of the contestants have been concealed and will be revealed to the general public on June 4 during a motorcade in Nevis, which will be followed by a ceremony.
