BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man was killed last night (Apr. 27) and his child’s mother hospitalised with a gunshot wound following a shooting incident in Upper Cayon.

Dead is Elvis Roberts, also known as Junior and Zunks, of Sarah Bowry, Upper Cayon.

According to a police press release, officers from the Cayon Police Station, Special Service Unit (SSU), Anti-Gang Unit and the Strike Force responded to a report of shooting at Upper Cayon, which occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m.

It stated that investigations revealed Roberts was found lying on the ground motionless with what appeared to be gunshot injuries to the body.

“Roberts was pronounced dead on the scene by the District Medical Officer Dr. Udo. The Coroner Mrs. Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe gave permission for the body to be removed and so the lifeless body of Roberts was taken to a funeral home for storage. Though there are no suspect(s) in custody assisting with the investigations, the police are in search of a number of persons of interest in this matter. Investigations are ongoing,” the release read.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes saw the lifeless body of Roberts with multiple gunshot wounds lying in a yard a short distance from where he lived in Sarah Bowry.

According to sources close to the Roberts family, the deceased, his child’s mother and their child, who is just under two years, were at his mother’s home, which is approximately 100 metres from his residence.

“He was speaking to his mother, and shortly after he and his girlfriend left to go home. Junior was holding the baby. While on their way home it seems as if the gunmen were waiting for him and they opened fire, hitting his girlfriend on one of her hands.

“Junior dropped the baby and ran, but it seems as if the gunmen caught up with him before he reached home. He ran into a yard just three houses from where he lives and fell to the ground…and there is where we found him dead,” one source said.

This media house learnt that an individual was seen making a call on his cellular phone shortly after Roberts had left his mother’s home.

“Just after Junior left his mother’s home, a certain man was seen making a phone call. Shortly after that guns started barking and his girlfriend ran back to his mother’s home and gave her the sad news,” another source said.

The young woman was rushed to the Joseph N France General Hospital while the body of her child’s father was taken to Jenkins Funeral Home.

SKNVibes also learnt that he was the fifth of six children and one of his two brothers was hospitalised after being shot on Good Friday, also in Upper Cayon.

Elvis Roberts’ death has taken the number of homicides committed in the twin-island Federation to 14 for this year; 10 on St. Kitts and four on Nevis.
