BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE woman, who was last night (Apr. 27) shot while in the company of the late Elvis Roberts, was treated for her injury at the Joseph N France General Hospital and subsequently discharged.

This information was confirmed by Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson, who stated that Mercia Wharton of John Street, Newtown was shot in her lower right arm.

He also stated that “sometime this morning while police were processing the crime scene, they recovered one .38 revolver with three rounds of matching ammunition. A number of spent shells have also been collected from the scene and all articles of evidential value were taken into police custody for further analysis”.

The weapon find brings the total of illegal firearms taken off the streets of the Federation to 14 for this year and 109 since 2006.

Last night, at approximately 9:40, 22-year-old Elvis Roberts, also known as Junior and Zunks, was killed execution-style a short distance from his Sarah Bowry, Upper Cayon home.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by the District Medical Officer, Dr. Udo.

According to sources close to the Roberts family, shortly before his death, Elvis, his child’s mother and their child, who is just under two years, were at his mother’s home, which is approximately 100 metres from his residence.

After leaving his mother’s home for his residence with the infant in his arms, an undisclosed number of gunmen opened fire in his direction, hitting his girlfriend in her right arm.

He dropped the child and started running in the direction of his home, while his injured girlfriend picked up the child and ran back to his mother’s residence.
The gunmen, who were not masked, gave chase and continued shooting in his direction until he collapsed in a neighbour’s yard, just three houses from where he lived.

Additional information reaching this media house indicates that the gunmen entered the yard and ensured that he would not survive by shooting him in the head. Also, when his mother and other family members were heading to the area where his motionless body laid, the gunmen fired a number of shots over their heads, which caused them to hastily retreat into their home.

The information further indicated that the gunmen continued shooting into the air while running and made good their escape.

Inspector Henderson stated that there are no suspect(s) in custody assisting with their investigations but the police are in search of a number of persons of interest in this matter.

Elvis Roberts’ death has taken the number of homicides committed in the twin-island Federation to 14 for this year; 10 on St. Kitts and four on Nevis.
