    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS ( May 10, 2006) --
In a move to ensure a better road network throughout Charlestown, the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) is in the process of preparing designs for a bridge and new road which would connect Lower Stoney Grove to the Island Main Road in the vicinity of the Girl Guides and Wards buildings.

Minister of Works and Area Representative for the St Pauls Constituency Hon Michael Perkins said on Monday May 8, 2006, once completed, the new additions would provide easier access for students of the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) and residents of Stoney Grove and also enhance the road network to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles on Nevis' roadways.

"The long term plan however calls for the actual construction of a bridge and a road from Lower Stoney in the vicinity of the Girl Guides and Wards buildings. We have already discussed this with the management of the Girl Guides organization and also the proprietor Mr. Ward. At present we are having a design for that bridge structure done by M. A. Kharafi and Sons and the final plan would see a bridge constructed and a road that would link the Island Main Road to this area at Lower Stoney Grove past the Charlestown Secondary School compound.

"I would say at this point that this is part and parcel of the vision that we in the Administration are concentrating on with respect to the road network in and around Charlestown. We expect to see a further influx of vehicles into the island and I don't see anything that is going to stem that tide, so we must prepare for the implications of increased vehicles on the island," he said.

Notwithstanding, the Minister explained that a temporary overpass has been constructed in response to a call for a foot path for  Sixth Form students who have been moved  from the CSS compound to the Wards Building across the Bath Ghaut to accommodate ongoing construction work on a new wing at the school.

The Minister also noted that plans were afoot for the construction of another road from the bridge which would link Lower Stoney Grove to other parts of the area "so that in the end we would have a very much upgraded road network in this part of Stoney Grove," he said.
