Police seize six firearms in three days

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE security forces continue to reap the fruits of their labour with the removal of yet another firearm from the Federation’s streets; the 19th since the commencement of the year and the sixth in three days .

     

    Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Joseph Liburd explained to SKNVibes that the latest gun find took place today (Apr. 30) at approximately 10:45 a.m. by members of the Anti-Gang Unit.

     

    He said the unit “carried out an operation in Irish Town area and found one shotgun and four cartridges of ammunition”. He however further explained that no one has been held accountable for the find and investigations are ongoing.

     

    Just hours before, according to a press release issued by the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, two firearms, numbers 18 and 17, were discovered and taken into police custody.

     

    “During a joint operation at about 4:30 this morning (Friday 30th April 2010) at Upper Cayon, one (1) Tech 9 semi automatic pistol and two (2) 9mm rounds of ammunition along with one (1) Galine 5.56 semi automatic rifle with seventeen (17) 5.56 rounds of ammunition were found in a hut.”

     

    The 15th and 16th firearms were discovered yesterday (Apr. 29) and Wednesday, April 28, 2010.

     

    A police press release informs, “As a result of the continued assistance from the general public two (2) more illegal firearms have been taken into police custody. During (Wednesday) afternoon…members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force found one (1) .38 revolver with three (3) rounds of matching ammunition while on an operation at White's Mountain in the Cayon area.

     

    “Also, this morning (April 29) the Police found one (1) .22 revolver and three (3) rounds of matching ammunition in an abandon building in the Irish Town area. These weapons and ammunition will be made available for further analysis if necessary.”

     

    On Wednesday morning, hours following the slaying of the Federation’s 14 homicide victim, Elvin ‘Junior’ ‘Zunks’ Roberts, the 14th firearm was found.

     

    “Some time this morning while police were processing the crime scene they recovered one .38 revolver with three (3) rounds of matching ammunition….A number of spent shells have also been collected from the scene and all articles of evidential value were taken into police custody for further analysis.”

     

    These and preceding finds, the police inform, are under investigation. The police have expressed gratitude to the public for its “continued assistance” in the fight against crime and violence.
