BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man was shot early this morning (May 2) after he allegedly attacked a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
Reports reaching SKNVibes indicate that sometime after 2:00 a.m. a group of men were engaged in a fight and a police officer intervened but was attacked by one of them. In his defence, the officer shot the man, whose name was given as Angus Conner of New Guinea.
When contacted, Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson said, “At about 2:45 this morning at the Strip in Frigate Bay, an off duty police officer attempted to prevent a group of men from beating a man. In the process, 36-year-old Angus Connor of New Guinea attacked the officer. The officer, in defence, shot and injured Connor.
“He was taken to the JNF Hospital, where he was treated for his injury and is warded in a stable condition. Investigations into this incident are ongoing.”
This is the second time in less than a month that police officers had to use their service firearm in defence against attackers.
On Monday, April 5, 41-year-old Neville Fahie of Newton Ground was shot in both legs during an altercation with the police in the vicinity of the Ferry Terminal in Basseterre while a boxing exhibition was in progress, as part of the Basil Henderson Easter Monday Aquatic Meet.
Fahie claimed he was shot without reason and revealed that he had previous unfavourable dealings with that police officer, which resulted in a court case that he won. The police however stated in a release that he was behaving in a disorderly manner and was warned on several occasions, “but threatened to kill the police, then beat the police and plunged at them with a piece of metal pipe with a concrete base used to brace the tents”.
