BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE are investigating a break-in at the St. Kitts Electricity Department (SKED) on Central Street, Basseterre, which occurred sometime on Monday evening (May 3).

Police Press and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Inspector Vaughan Henderson, told SKNVibes they received reports of the incident at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday (May 4).

He however could not say how the perpetrator(s) had gained entrance to the building but revealed that a sum of money was stolen.

“The police quickly responded to reports of the break-in, and inquiries revealed that the building was secured at about 6:10 p.m. on Friday, April 30. It was discovered broken into by one of the department’s workers at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday,” Henderson outlined.

“A sum of money was reported missing, but at this stage there is no indication of missing computers or other electronic equipment. The scene was processed by officers of the crime scene department, who took a number of photographs and lifted fingerprints.”
The PRO said that police did not currently have any suspects pertaining to the matter, but stressed that investigations were still ongoing.

He also stated there was no indication that the break-in was an inside job, as police were still gathering information about the nature of the incident.

According to SKED General Manager, Bertil Browne, the department was closed all of yesterday while police conducted their investigation, but was open for business today.

Sixty-five incident of burglary were recorded in the first half of 2009, representing a 30 percent increase over 2008’s mid-year total of 50.

There were 76 burglaries in 2008.
