CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (May 10, 2006) -- All Nevis' ports of entry and departure will soon be outfitted with close circuit television monitoring systems. The installation process commenced in October 2005 and according to Mr Collin Dore, Chairman of the Nevis Air and Seaports Authority Board, the project is scheduled for completion in July 2006.
The security upgrade is in keeping with a requirement of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code which provides the framework for cooperation between vessel and port facilities in terms of maritime security.
According to Mr Dore on Tuesday May 09, 2006, in the aftermath of the September 11, 2002 terrorist bombings of the World Trade Centre in the United States of America and as a result of the increased numbers of US visitors to Caribbean ports, a study was done of the ports in the Caribbean including Nevis and recommendations were made for the installation of close circuit television for all the ports in the Federation.
"To date we are happy to report that work is ongoing in Nevis at a very fast pace at the Vance Amory International Airport and at Long Point the ducts have been laid for the installation of the cables. In Charlestown work is ongoing as well and we are hoping within the next month and a half, we will have all our ports in Nevis being covered by close circuit television and camera protection," he said, adding, that at the conclusion of the upgrade, Nevis would have met all the requirements under the ISPS Code.
The installation of the close circuit television is one of several port security upgrades funded through the Government of St Kitts and Nevis by the World Bank.
