Green Valley Calypso Show underway

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS this year’s Green Valley Festival is underway, calypsonians have been registering and rehearsing to compete in the Calypso Show.

According to the Chairperson of the Green Valley Festival, Vernon Benjamin, several calypsonians have so far registered and they are expecting more.

So far, one newcomer has registered and she is Shaday Peters, whose singing name is ‘Sha-Angel’, a former contestant in the Miss Green Valley Pageant.

Peters will join Facka, Shotgun, Lord Piggy, Mighty Florfer, Copperhead, Mr. Various and former green valley calypso king Bra Bread in hopes of overthrowing reigning monarch Singing Angie.

He said that they are expecting some major sponsors to come in and show their support financially towards this year’s Calypso Show, which would be held on May 22 at the Festival Village.

A calypso tent that was scheduled for May 12 at the Keys Hard Court may not occur because of lack of practice, due to the band being engaged in other events. Benjamin however said that the May 15 Eliminations at Big Lice Night Spot is still on.

Last year, Singing Angie stopped Bra Bread in his quest for a repeat victory and won the competition with ‘Queen of Green and ‘Life is like that’.

Angie, whose real name is Andrea Walters, also went on to win the Best of the Rest Calypso Competition at the 2009 National Carnival celebrations.
