BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE yardflex.com news site has reported that Sheila Crump Johnson, who along with her husband Bob, started the Black Entertainment Television popularly known as BET, is ashamed of the channel.
According to yardflex.com, the couple, who are now divorced, started BET three decades ago and sold the company to Viacom in 2000 and pocketed $1.3B.
The now 60-year-old woman said that she does not watch the channel.“I suggest to my kids [a 20-something daughter and a college-age son] that they don’t watch it… I’m ashamed of it, if you want to know the truth,” she was quoted as saying.
She said that BET is making matters worse, and potentially contributing to the spread of AIDS by promoting promiscuous, unprotected sex in raunchy late-night rap videos.
Many officials have aired views on the banning of the channel in St. Kitts and Nevis, as they feel it promotes violence and has a negative effect on the nation’s youth.
Artistes, who have music videos that have been accused of promoting negativity, include Lil Kim, Notorious B.I.G, Foxy Brown, Snoop Dog and now Lil Wayne’s music videos are also looked at as a negative influence.
The channel also now airs a number of reality shows including Toya and Tina and Monica’s ‘Still Standing’.
