The mother of Devon Johnson was present in court when her son's case was tried at the Magistrate Court on Monday May 8 and wants her son to get help for his alcohol use.
Johnson was charged with wounding Ivan James on Saturday March 18, 2006 outside Jeffers' home in Basseterre.
Johnson plead guilty to the charge but said that he also received wounding from the argument that then turned into a fight.
Police gave evidence that the complainant Jeffers heard Johnson and another man by the name of Junie Brown outside his home arguing.
Jeffers shouted to Johnson from his verandah, "Boy we don't want you out here". Jeffers' girlfriend then went out into the street and walked down the road and Jeffers followed closely behind.
The Police Prosecutor who was giving the evidence in court said that Johnson said to Jeffers, "Boy I want to F@*% your woman!"
The comment resulted in an argument between Johnson and Jeffers.
They were standing face to face arguing when Johnson accused Jeffers of spitting in his face. Johnson then spat in the complainants face and a struggled proceeded. At that time Johnson picked up an empty soda bottle from the side of the road broke it and swiped it across Jeffers face.
At that time Browne told Jeffers to go to the hospital of which he did and after being treated at the hospital he went to the police to make the complain.
Magistrate Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe told Johnson that since it was his first offence she would issue him a warning and told him to behave himself and stop fighting.
His mother, who was present stood up and said that Brown, Johnson and Jeffers are all related. She then said that Brown did not want to testify in court because of the family relationship and said that Jeffers should have dropped the charges.
"They are all family, but I want my son to stop drinking alcohol he drinks too much and that causes him to misbehave," Johnson's mother told Mallalieu-Webbe.
Mallalieu-Webbe then wrote down the name of an Alcohol Abuse group on a paper that was given to the mother about the whereabouts of the group that issues counseling for those who need help.
"I hope you will go to this group and get help as your mother would like," she said.
Johnson who seemed please with the results of his sentencing said that he would attend the sessions.
