BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEN, having your own personal style is as important for you as it is for women.
According to Juella Gumbs of JuluStyles, style dictates personality and lifestyle.
“From what I’ve observed, most men dress to suit the person they are. They may add in a trendy fashion piece at times, but it’s always to suit their style,” she said.
The 23-year-old Kittitian, who is currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Marketing with a minor in Journalism at the Baruch College in New York, also said looking good is all about knowing what works for you and exploiting it.
Although there are varied styles that men adopt, there are certain must have items that a man should have in his wardrobe.
Tailored suit - “You never know when you’ll need to throw on a suit (if your job doesn’t require it) so it’s imperative to have one stashed away just in case,” she said.
“Choose a basic color and add your own personal flair with color and accessories (such as cuff links, ties, and pocket-squares). And having that suit tailored is mandatory!”
Sleek Sneakers - The next item that Juella said is a must have for men are sleek sneakers. “I’ve noticed that a lot of Kittitian men are into sportier sneakers like Air Jordan’s and Nike Air Force Ones.
While they do serve their purpose and are nice to have, a sleek sneaker is the difference between a boy and a man. Think Puma, Lacoste or Prada, depending on your price point and style. Boat shoes are also a stylish alternative.”
Watch- A watch is also an important must have for a man. “It’s completely up to you what material you choose – leather, precious metal or fabric - but you should have one. Besides obviously needing it to determine the time, watches give off the impression of purpose, and women love a man with purpose,” she said.
Button-up – “Best bet is buying it in a neutral color,” Juella said. “In fact, you should have one in every color and beyond the basic just because men’s fashion is more limited than women’s. Experiment with prints to suit your style.”
Leather belt- Don’t forget about those leather belts!
“Belts are even more important for men to have than women, especially since the whole pants-below-bottom epidemic. The same rules apply here in terms of having neutral colors to match your shoes.”
Bonus item! – Shorts!
“Instead of jeans for a weekend look, turn your style up a notch by wearing woven shorts versus denim. Get crazy with plaid, pinstripes or keep it classic in a solid color.”
